Reading recommendations
Here is a list of articles, texts, books, etc., that I have found to be of interest.

Machine learning books
If anyone is reading this and is new to machine learning, then I would recommend starting with one of the following books:
-- Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning by Christopher Bishop
-- Deep Learning by Ian Goodfellow, Yoshua Bengio, and Aaron Courville
Read the first few chapters and then the rest of the book as needed.
Misc. books
I've noticed that during my PhD studies, I've read a lot of articles and papers. Often to the detriment of leisure reading. So I thought it would be interesting to include a few books that have nothing to do with academia.
Tove Jansson -- Sommarboken
For those who don't know, Tove Jansson is the Finnish author who wrote the Moomin books. I have not read the Moomin books extensively, but the characters are charming. Regardless, that is besides the point. I instead want to recommend The Summer book, which is a novel about a child and her grandmother who spend the summer together on a small island (with infrequent visits from the child's father). Nothing much happens, they converse a bit, walk around the Island, and philosophize about life. It's a nice read that made me want to move to a small island, at least for a summer. It reminds me of when the game "Firewatch" came out
